Debt-free companies in India: large and mid caps with almost no borrowing

By the DecideChart research team · Published 27 September 2026 · Data updated 5 November 2026

A company with no debt cannot be pushed into trouble by its lenders. When interest rates rise or sales slow, it keeps control of its own decisions. That is why many long-term investors start their research with businesses that barely borrow.

Profitable, practically debt-free companies today

These 30 companies are worth more than ₹5,000 crore, have a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.05 or less, a ROCE of at least 15%, and were profitable over the last year. The list is rebuilt daily.

What “debt free” does not tell you

Low debt is a safety feature, not a growth engine. Some debt-free companies hoard cash because they have nowhere good to invest it, and their returns slowly fall. Others look debt free on the balance sheet but carry large lease or supplier obligations. Always read debt alongside return on capital and cash flow.

Banks and lenders are different

Banks and finance companies borrow as their business model, so a debt-to-equity ratio says little about their safety. For lenders, look at capital adequacy, bad loans and return on assets instead, and read the debt part of any health score with that in mind.
