Promoter pledging explained: why pledged shares are a risk signal
Promoters are the founders or parent company behind a listed business. Sometimes they use their shares as security for a loan. That is called pledging, and it is disclosed to the exchanges every quarter.
Why investors watch it
If the share price falls far enough, the lender can sell the pledged shares to recover the loan. That selling pushes the price down further, which can trigger more selling. Several Indian stocks have fallen sharply in exactly this spiral. A high pledge also hints that the promoter needs cash, which is worth understanding.
